REMARKABLE - Leaders Achieving Climate Neutrality

The climate emergency and energy transition agendas require clear leadership, ambition and conviction if Europe is to meet 2050 climate neutrality targets. The ambition of the European project REMARKABLE (H2020), which brings together 10 European partners from Slovenia, Austria, Ireland, Spain, Sweden, Croatia, Belgium and France, is to put in place remarkable actions and make a step-change by relying on a network of "climate leaders".

Leaders Achieving Climate Neutrality

Climate change leadership used to be a high-level concern of governments but it is now a key issue discussed at all levels, from local community leaders to presidents.

Some communities are trying to focus on mitigation and adaptation strategies but are frequently lacking the strong leadership that will help them achieve a robust response. REMARKABLE will build a new leadership capacity through a Climate Leadership Programme designed with and for leaders who, through their actions and inspiration, will drive their municipalities, public authorities, communities and regions.

Climate emergency, let's move up a gear

A myriad of new services and solutions are required as enablers to achieve climate neutrality. The REMARKABLE project will develop new services to be expanded in the Clean Energy Transition and Climate Neutrality challenges. Design Thinking approaches will be applied to deliver new services (e.g. activation, coaching, training, networking, financing dedicated to climate neutrality) across the participating countries.

Overall, aiming to accompany the territories of the 7 European regions involved in the project and replicate its activities beyond the project, REMARKABLE will achieve:

  • the training of 120+ actors from multiple sectors,
  • 60+ territorial roadmaps,
  • 14 new services in support of climate neutrality,
  • a network of more than 300 leaders in the sustainable energy fields.

By 2030:

  • 1,000 individuals will have completed the Climate Leadership Programme,
  • 360 Climate Neutrality Roadmaps are completed,
  • 60 new Climate Neutrality Services developed and active,
  • 1,500 members within our Climate Leaders Circle,
  • 10,000 stakeholders influenced and informed by our actions.

Ethnography as an innovative methodology

The Climate Leadership Programme will use ethnography and people-centred approaches to address the key characteristics, drivers and behaviours of leaders as well as the challenges which hinder the implementation of current and emerging approaches for reaching the climate goals.
By translating strategic aspirations and policy ambitions into concrete and disruptive far-reaching measures, the REMARKABLE will facilitate the creation of 60 roadmaps for public authorities.

AURA-EE's role

Faced with new support needs identified among local actors in 2020, AURA-EE and its partners - the  ADEME and the Region - have initiated a prospective and collective reflection. The objective is to have innovative resources to encourage territories to "change gear" on environmental and climate emergency issues, i.e. to multiply local actions so that the responses provided are equal to the challenges. This workshop is in line with the questions raised at European level by the REMARKABLE project on the notion of climate emergency.Synergies will thus be created between the two projects, enabling the continuation of work in the region which will feed into the European project in which they will be promoted.

At a later stage of the project, AURA-EE will be responsible of the summary report of the climate neutrality roadmap for the consortium.
