2024.10.25
On October 16th 2024, the Fondazione Bruno Kessler (FBK) and the Provincia Autonoma di Trento hosted the Hydrogen for the Future of the Alps midterm conference, part of the AMETHyST project. The event aimed to foster dialogue on hydrogen’s potential in the Alpine region and present key initiatives that contribute to developing hydrogen ecosystems.
Key Highlights
1. Launch of "skHyline" https://skhyline.eu/
The skHyline initiative was unveiled, aiming to enhance the visibility of hydrogen-related strategies in Alpine regions and support policymakers in implementing effective hydrogen policies. This initiative will:
- Share specific cases of hydrogen use across various territories.
- Highlight the benefits of hydrogen as a clean energy source.
- Provide mapping of projects and initiatives, along with guidelines to promote widespread adoption.

2. Expert Insights
Findings from an upcoming AMETHyST report on hydrogen policies were shared, highlighting key challenges such as uneven hydrogen strategies across countries and the need for strong regional-national coordination, funding, and stakeholder involvement. The report will soon be available on the project website.
3. Panel Discussions
Experts discussed hydrogen’s challenges, such as high costs and lack of national support, and emphasized the importance of long-term policies and cross-sector cooperation. One of the key challenges highlighted was the high cost and lack of existing hydrogen applications. While hydrogen is gaining traction, there are not yet many concrete projects, and efforts to pilot projects are essential to build momentum.
4. Project Showcases
Large hydrogen projects demonstrated hydrogen’s potential in decarbonizing industry and mobility across the Alpine region.

Overall, the conference presented hydrogen as a transformative energy source for the Alpine region, while recognizing the hurdles related to cost, political support, and infrastructure development.
The conference stressed the need for collaboration between policymakers, industry, and academia to accelerate hydrogen transition. Long-term policies, public-private partnerships, and targeted financial incentives were identified as critical to speeding up hydrogen adoption. Experts emphasized the importance of promoting public understanding and acceptance of hydrogen through education and training.
The event was also an opportunity for meetings and visits between partners and observers. A tour of Solydera’s advanced facilities was organised and highlighted the company's green hydrogen production units, which use renewable energy sources to split water into hydrogen and oxygen via electrolysis.
