ADAPTNOW- ADAPTation Capacity Strengthening for Highly Affected and Exposed Territories in the Alps NOW

In the future, recurring disasters related to climate change will affect nature and humans in the Alpine region even more severely and unpredictably than today. In order to be able to cope with unpredictable climate events, ADAPTNOW works on strengthening the adaptive capacity of Highly Affected and Exposed Territories (HEAT).

For a green and climate resilient Alpine region

The Alps are confronted with climate change-related disasters of increasing magnitude, recurrence and unpredictability, with consequent impacts on nature and people.

Traditional weather patterns are being replaced by volatile weather events that are increasingly difficult to cope with. Working on the management of these uncertainties to prevent such events is becoming urgent to limit both material and human damage.

The objective of ADAPTNOW is to identify, adjust and make available tools and solutions for climate adaptation and risk mitigation management.

The partnership around the project, consisting of research centres, regional agencies and municipalities from the Alpine Space, will allow to exchange on common climate risks and to set up pilot actions in the territories, in order to test innovative tools for risk mitigation management.

This project is funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) through the Interreg Alpine Space programme.

Expected results and collaborations

ADAPTNOW is a continuation of the cooperation between the Alpine regions that started during the French Presidency of the European Union Strategy for the Alpine Region (EUSALP), in particular with the conference "Climate, Risks, Energy", organised on 30 September and 1 October 2020 in Chamonix.

The main expected results of this project are:

  • A guide for the introduction of advanced climate adaptation and risk mitigation planning at local level.
  • A package of services for sectoral agencies that support the scaling up of local climate action and risk management.
  • A guidebook that will provide advice for replicating good practices in other HEATterritories in the Alps.

These results will be disseminated to the network of elected officials and technicians active in SUERA.

ADAPTNOW will be developed in complementarity with X-RISK-CC, another Interreg Alpine Space project in which AURA-EE is involved, and which will provide technical expertise on chain disasters.

Specific objective in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

Thanks to the project, AURA-EE will also be able to extend the use of ClimaSTORY®, a serious game created by AURA-EE, helping territories identifying climate adaptaion solution. This tool will be adapted to better target HEAT mountain territories, and an online version of the tool will be developed.
